Location
I took this photo in 2010, in my home studio near Barcelona. At that time I just started to discover photography and I loved to experiment with my macro lens.Time
It was early in the morning when I started walking around my home’s garden looking for something interesting to photograph. When I saw the dry rosebush branches on the ground all got clear. I took them into my studio and I started working on the composition.Lighting
The lighting was so simple. I put a soft box behind the rosebush branches and I used a color gel to get this orange background.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark II, with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens.Inspiration
At that time I loved to capture images with multiple water drops reflecting colorful backgrounds on each one of them. I thought that maybe it could be an interesting approach to go for a plain background and put the emphasis on the silhouette.Editing
The original idea was to keep a certain amount of detail on the branches but when I was editing it I decided to push the blacks and get a more defined silhouette. Besides that, I had to do some cleaning on a few water droops, and I adjusted saturation a little bit to get a more colorful composition. In my camera bag
It has been a long journey since I took this photo. Nowadays, I’m doing a lot of HDR and It’s difficult to go out without my old 190XPROB Manfrotto tripod, a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM, and my favorite lens: the Canon EF 16-35mm / 2,8 L II USM.Feedback
The idea behind getting a good silhouette is so simple; you just need to under expose your main subject to get a bright background. Maybe the most difficult part is to get a compelling composition; this can be a difficult task outdoors but in the studio you have complete control over light conditions, and the only task is to find a subject with a recognizable silhouette like the rosebush thorns or the water drops.
