Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near Odessa (Ukraine) on firth called Kuyalnik. It’s the old soviet mud-treatment sanatorium. According to rumors in the old days people mined salt here, today you can see the endless rows of wooden salt pillars. Far away on the background you can see three high buildings of this old sanatorium.

Time

It was a sunset. And it was really beautiful and red.

Lighting

Dramatic red light during sunset and beautiful flying clouds above. I'm using ND filter here to make long exposure and make fluid clouds to look more dramatic.

Equipment

This picture was taken using: Camera: Canon T2i (550D), Lens: Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 with 1000ND filter, Tripod: Manfrotto 055 XPROB + Manfrotto 3D ballhead, Timer remote control. I also used the rubber boots to move away from the shore about 50 meters.

Inspiration

I like this place and this magic wooden sticks in water so I visit his place time to time to take some photos.

Editing

Originally I shoot in Raw then process it in Lightroom and after it I'm continue processing in Photoshop to make final adjustment and save for web.

In my camera bag

Now I'm mostly using Canon 6D and Samyang 14mm 2.8 lens for landscape and night photography. Small tripod by Slik Sprint Mini. Also Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod and Manfrotto 3D ball head from time to time. Also I'm using Panasonic GH4 and several lenses to shoot videos or timelapses.

Feedback

It is always interesting to catch sunset or sunrise light on surface of water. Just don't forget to take ND filter and strong tripod with you.
