Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this at a Family's home in Sydney, Australia for a family shoot we did after their son was born.

Time

It was about 10am in December, so it wasn't so hot yet. We also shot a little bit outside.

Lighting

Because it was early, there was a fantastic amount of light streaming through some floor to ceiling windows. They had a mezzanine floor that overlooked it, which is where they dog liked to sit. You can see the shadow of the bars of the balcony on the baby's head.

Equipment

I shot this with a Canon 5D MK II and a 50mm 1.4 lens at f2.8, 800 ISO, 1/800. I was laying on my stomach just like the little boy.

Inspiration

It was the interaction between the baby and the dog that inspired me to capture this moment. The dog was quite watchful over his new little human brother and seemed to guard him from me at times. I took advantage of this when they were playing on the mezzanine and the baby decided he needed to rest. It was only for a minute so I flatted out and laid there with them.

Editing

I always shoot in colour and then convert to black and white. The image works in both styles as the tones and colours match, but I prefer it in black and white to focus more on the mood of being at peace.

In my camera bag

I always have a 5 way reflector and for Family shoots my 24-70 and my 50mm lenses as well as a backup camera. I also sometimes have dog treats if I know beforehand there will be a pet joining us.

Feedback

Never work with children or animals.... is rubbish. With this type of thing you need to get off your feet and crawl around as much as they baby or pet does. Get yourself on their level and try things from their point of view and don't worry about crying or barking. It's all part of the experience. Not every family photo has to be about smiling into the camera.
