I love the mist and mountains soaring over the trees showing first a big mass of trees and then suddenly we see a mighty, giant mountain overlooking the trees and showing scale and significance.

Location
I was taking some landscape shots at the base of the Grand Teton mountain range in Wyoming USA when a snowstorm came over the crest of the mountains and poured down to the plain where I was standing. A few minutes later I couldn't see a thing.Time
This shot was taken late afternoon at the end of September hence the colour of the trees.Lighting
The sun highlighting the snow meant that the scene was high in contrast. As I was hand holding the camera I set a fast shutter speed to capture as much definition in the snow as I could. I was a long way from the focus point so a wide aperture didn't affect the depth of field much. I entered this photo into a camera club competition and the judge said he liked it apart from the burnt out highlights around the trees. I don't think he realised it was snow. Perhaps he should've gone to Specsavers!Equipment
Nikon D5200 with a Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6 lens. Iso 100 Focal length 110mm exposure 1/1250 sec at f4.5 aperture priorityInspiration
I was just fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. I always tend to glance behind me when I'm taking landscape shots as quite often I spot something worth taking. This was exactly what happened that day.Editing
I lightened the shadows at the base of the photo and lifted the highlights a little to make the snow stand out from the dark mountains. In my camera bag
At the time I took this shot I was using Nikon equipment ie Nikon D800 and Nikon D5200. The former is too heavy for me when taking handheld shots so I am now using a Sony A7RII with two lenses to keep the weight down.Feedback
Someone once said to me that if you want more interesting photos you have to go to more interesting places and I generally agree with that. I like places that inspire me and if I am enthusiastic about a place such as the Grand Tetons in this case I usually take better images. Conversely for example I struggle getting any good shots of the Ashdown Forest near where I live as it's just so green and extremely difficult to find a good composition.
