Behind The Lens

Location

This image was shot in the month of October, when rainfall is high in the UK. We were on a path between some trees and a wheat field in the north of Bedfordshire and as you can see the path was quite water-logged.

Time

The sun was getting quite low in the sky when this shot was taken. It was just before 5 pm and the sun made a rare appearance for an October afternoon.

Lighting

I had to be very low to the ground to take this shot. My instinct when shooting children is always to get down to their level, however I had to move up and down a little to find the right angle to get the light reflecting off the ripples in the water.

Equipment

I shot this image handheld and with only my old Nikon D7000.

Inspiration

My favourite way of photographing children is to watch them at play. I took quite a few pictures that day while out on a walk with my two children and for most of it they were playing in the puddles. This one just happened to be when my eldest son was walking through the puddle instead and treading ever so carefully.

Editing

There wasn't a great amount of post-processing done with this image, however I did up the contrast so that the folds in my son's clothes stood out a little more and the highlights in his hair were more prominent.

In my camera bag

I currently shoot with a Nikon D610 and my favourite lens is the Nikkor 105mm f/2 DC. I love the Defocus Control feature and find I get really sharp results with this lens. I also find you can never go wrong with a 50mm f/2.8 as it is a good focal length for so many different types of shots.

Feedback

I always prefer shots of children playing and doing their every day thing. It does mean a fair bit of following around and being prepared to move a lot but the results are a lot less forced. Just be sure to set a high shutter speed to capture their fast movements!
