Bryan College, Dayton TN

I had just finished five long days of photographing Bryan College, so I would be leaving the following morning to return home. As I was saying my goodbyes, I learned that graduation would be the next morning, Saturday. I then said, “I can’t leave without shooting that event.” They returned with no, you have been here all week, and they knew I was tired. So, I said I would shoot the event and would not charge them. I just had this feeling that I would be rewarded by getting a good shot, and they, in turn, would benefit.

The weather was just perfect. Not the greatest of light. A bit overcast, which meant no squints. While walking around searching for a moment to capture I came across one of my all-time favorite images in my library. There sat this magnificent Marine in full dress. He looked like what you would need for a recruiting poster.

Now, I see this incredible contrast taking place. There sat at attention was this Marine looking straight ahead. No expression, unless you count the discipline look on his face. He never moved. His white-gloved hands were resting on his lap. His white hat squared to perfection, with a bright red stripe that followed from under his wrinkle-free coat to the tops of his shiny black shoes. His first medal laid solely on his chest in a sea of dark blue. I felt so proud seeing him, and what he represented.

Around him were all the other graduating students. Some sat up straight, while others had a respectful slouch. Some were reading while the speaker gave free advice on what they should expect once graduated. A few folks I noticed had a hard time keeping there eyes open. Low, but audible conversations would pop-up from time to time throughout the graduating students, even a soft giggle or two.

Everyone, there was getting the degrees that they worked so hard in achieving, but none had the added achievement of a Semper Fi Degree.
