I had to sneak up on this butterfly. It took two hours before I finally was able to.

The colors here are nice. Unfortunately the composition leaves a bit to be desired. When shooting butterflies, I always make sure to get ALL of wings in the shot. You might also want to try shooting from your subject's eye level, instead of from above, to make the shot more interesting.

Behind The Lens

Location

There is not much I can tell anyone about how I took this photo. I am entirely self taught. I simply played with the setting on my camera until I got the effect I wanted. I know very little about shutter speeds, F stops and such things.

Time

As far as I can remember I took this photo in the afternoon when the sun was high in the sky.

Lighting

I don't know anything about lighting. If I take a photo and it's a bit dark I just adjust the shutter speed until I get the shot the way I want it. If it's too light I either adjust the shutter speed or I put my shadow over the subject I am trying to shoot.

Equipment

I took this photo with a Fujifilm Finepix S1000.

Inspiration

The only thing that inspired me to take this photo at the time was the desire to see just how close I could get to the Butterfly before it flew off. It has also taught me patience.

Editing

For this photo I used the Fujifilm editing program that that I got when I had some photos put on CD at Walmart.

In my camera bag

At the time this photo was taken the Fujifilm camera was the only thing I had as the lens cannot be changed.

Feedback

The only real advice I can give since I am still a Beginner myself is to get out and play with your camera. Try all the different settings to see what works and what does not. Butterflies are extremely shy fickle creatures. If you don't have a good telephoto lens then your best piece of equipment is Patience, Patience and more Patience. I could put down a lot of technical stuff but I would only be lying. So I have just been honest.
