Thanks! It's a unique landscape - you wouldn't expect this by the surrounding landscape!

Thanks! So do I - I've made many stops this year, iced over, moonlit, complete darkness (painted with light), snow, vivid sunsets, vibrant sunrises - I've seen so much there, I enjoy it! Dynamic scsne.

One of my favorite places- too bad it's such a tight spot to get a good shot of- except, you did!

Thanks, I try to go often! It's always very different (to me, anyway!) - 6 times this winter (stayed 3 nights) and they were all incredibly unique scenes!

Thanks Tom! I was there a couple times this winter with 0-10 degree temps ... it got close! I have a couple pics on ViewBug from a sunrise 2 months earlier, here is one - www.viewbug.com/photo/5309405

This one is just under 200ft and another closer to Seattle that I hit during the cold spell is about 268ft. www.viewbug.com/photo/7107771

Thank you!! Yes, this is a blend of 3 exposures - otherwise, the canyon walls are quite shaded. Appreciate the comments, greatly!

Beautiful light! I am hoping to make it there sometime. I like your capture. Nice light and details. The details are very sharp.

Thanks!! It's a unique place - it's great in the spring, higher runoff, more green on the hills and moderate temps for hiking. Winter can be unique too - been there a couple times when it's frozen! Thanks again!

Location
This is Palouse Falls in Eastern Washington - the official state waterfall of Washington State!Time
This was taken just as the sun was setting - since this was taken in late January, the sun was setting earlier in the day, around 5PM!Lighting
While the skies were somewhat drab moments earlier, the clouds lit up as the sun reached the horizon bringing some great color to the scene!Equipment
This was taken with a Canon 7D and the wide 10-22 lens. You can get right up to the edge of the cliff but you need a wide lens to capture the scene, including the falls, cliffs & canyon! And, I almost always use my Gitzo tripod on landscape shots!Inspiration
Palouse Falls is a fascinating place - surrounded by a desert-like landscape, you drive through a pasture leading to the beauty of the Palouse River and Falls! The scene is unique each time I go - varying flows, iced over in the winter, roaring in the spring, a great swimming hole in the summer and a great place for night photography!Editing
I do minimal processing- I did bracket my exposure since the area around the falls can be dark and shaded, I combined these to bring out the details in these areas. In my camera bag
The contents of my bag - or back of my car vary by my destination! If I'm packing my gear, it's usually my Canon 5D Mark III with my various lenses, including my favorite 100-400 II. If I don't need to pack my gear, I always have my aerial rigs with me for a different perspective - a quadcopter and custom built hexacopter!Feedback
Most importantly, patience! Just because the sky lacks interest one moment, it can change at any time! Watch the sky, clouds, sun & shadows to anticipate how things might change!
