For a while I've had this idea for a villain character that controls a swarm of birds. I had always pictured it with crows, but then I realized I'd seen pictures like that before and I already had a large batch of seagull pictures I took at the beach. Why couldn't the birds be seagulls?

I took this photo in the studio where I work in Lebanon, PA. The background image, as well as all the seagull pictures, were shot on a vacation in Myrtle Beach.Time
I took this picture after hours at the studio where I work. I do all of my personal shoots for my portfolio after we close.Lighting
The main key light was a large Octobank in front of her, slightly off to camera left. Two flash-heads with small reflectors were fired into a white seamless background to mostly blow it out. Two more flash-heads with small reflectors were angled to hit from behind her on either side to add the edge light.Equipment
This was shot with a Hasselblad H2 with a PhaseOne digital back. If my memory is correct, I was using an 80mm prime lens. As far as flash equipment goes, it was all older Commit Flashhead lighting gear. Other than that, just some seamless paper for a backdrop and a couple big pieces of foam-core to block the edge lights from flaring out the camera.Inspiration
I had been on a beach trip and took a ton of images of seagulls in flight. I knew that one day I would use them for something. I had always had this idea to do an image of a girl whose large flowing dress is turning into crows. One day it dawned on me that the birds didn't necessarily have to be crows and I had all those pictures of seagulls. So, I shot my wife in the studio with the intention of creating some sort of dark villainess character.Editing
As you probably guessed, this photo was heavily manipulated. I cut out and composited all the birds together and put my subject onto the background. During the shoot, I took several images of the thin black fabric being thrown up in the air, and I used those to extend the swirling dress. After all the pieces were in place, I did a lot of digital painting on top of the image to affect the coloring, shading, and details. I even changed her hair from blonde to black! Because I work for a commercial photography studio, I have access to a LOT of equipment, but these are the items I use most. To create an image like this, I would say the main thing to focus on has to be planning. This image would not be what it is if I had not formed a clear image in my head of what I was going for. Everything from costuming to makeup was planned out to create this dark yet beautiful (at least I hope it's beautiful) image. Take lots of notes before you start setting up the shoot. Write everything down, even if you're convinced it's an obviously little detail and you'll remember it.
