Location
This photo was taken at a facility I boarded my horses at in Stephenville, TX during my first semester of college.Time
I took this in the early evening. Some call it the "golden hour". This was one of my daily rituals. I would take my horse, Charlie, out of his pen to the grazing area to run and play. He was particularly playful that day and I was able to get some wonderful shots but this one is my absolute favorite!Lighting
This photo was taken with only natural lighting. He just happened to be standing in the right place at the right time. The way the sun highlights his face really accents his features and the softness about him. I feel as though it truly captures his personality.Equipment
I used a Canon PowerShot. It was my very first "real" camera. Even though it was not a DSLR, it was still a very good camera.Inspiration
I love animals and I especially love close up shots. I've always been fascinated with the eyes of an animal. Since I also train horses, I constantly wonder what they are thinking and how to communicate with them better. I feel as though watching their eyes and the small movements is the best way to interpret what they are telling me.Editing
At the time I took this picture, I did not have any editing tools on my computer other than iPhoto. I simply cropped the image down some and hit the "enhance" button which made the colors a little brighter and slightly more clear but this image is pretty much raw otherwise. In my camera bag
Being an amateur/hobbyist, I don't have much equipment. Right now, I just have a small Nikon in my little camera bag and some extra batteries!Feedback
With an image like this one I would say it took a lot of patience and timing. Horses, or just animals in general, are very difficult to photograph, especially up close, since they do have a mind of their own and tend to move whenever they please! You'll have to take 100 shots to get just one that you like. I sit out for hours watching my animals move and wait for the perfect moment to get the best shot.
