Behind The Lens

Location

Near a lake in Florida, in a park.

Time

It was around 5:00 am. The sun was just rising, there was still very little light.

Lighting

I took my usual reflective umbrella and had my subject hold it like a rain umbrella. I also had her hold the speedlight inside of the umbrella as well, so it would shoot back on her and light her. It was sort of a spur of the moment experiment, but I did really like the result.

Equipment

Canon 60D, 430exii speedlite, and a reflective umbrellla. The camera was hand-held.

Inspiration

Honestly it was taken for an old Viewbug contest, I don't even remember which one inspired me. This was not the photo I entered in that contest, it was one of the extras. However since then I have found it to be one of my favorites. Again, sometimes your best were not even planned!

Editing

I did a little sharpening and darkening of the shadows, that is about it.

In my camera bag

I carry a small camera bag with one or two extra lens, my camera body, and the off camera flash. I rarely bring anything else unless I specifically need too.

Feedback

Yes, get very creative, and weird, with your flash. I have bought many "extras" for my camera, and the Speedlight is still my all time favorite. Point it in different directions, hide it, place it in plain sight, just get creative! Shoot-through and reflective umbrellas are very fun. I love making homemade reflectors out of aluminum foil as well, because you can shape it. If you have a thought, do it! Don't ever say it was too crazy to try.
