Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Chester Zoo. I think hes quite an old lion but with a beautiful face.

Time

It was taken around lunchtime in February, quite cold but with a decent bit of light. It was so quiet that most of the animals were quite happy to pose.

Lighting

I wasn’t sure if it would turn out as well as it did as he was looking straight at me.

Equipment

This was taken with my first Panasonic Lumix FZ45, a smallish bridge camera. I rarely use a tripod or extra lenses as the Panasonic AI is so good nothing more is needed. I have since bought an FZ100, FZ200 and recently bought a second hand FZ72 which has a very good zoom.

Inspiration

I had been walking round the Zoo for a while taking different shots and saw this beauty sitting on his own just staring out towards me. I really thought He would have moved before I could get my camera ready so was really happy he carried on watching me.

Editing

I don’t use raw so its rare that any post-processing is required apart from a slight crop.

In my camera bag

I usually only have my camera with me with a spare battery and lens cleaner and a clear plastic bag if its raining. I am very much a lazy tog who has never quite figured out how to use the aperture, iso and shutter speed settings and my camera is mostly set on automatic.

Feedback

Patience is usually the key; keep looking around to get the best position and make sure the light isn’t dazzling the lens.
