Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken while on a trip to Switzerland. We stayed in one place, the small town of Meiringen, east of Brienz. On this particular day, May 29, 2012 we were on our way by train to Lucerne and passed by this village of Lungern. I had been standing between cars capturing images of the countryside when I captured this photo as the train passed the town.

Time

It was around 10:00 AM as we passed by with the sun behind us.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect as it was mid-morning with the sun behind us with some clouds in the sky.

Equipment

I captured this image handheld with a Canon 5D MkII using Canon EF 24-105mm lens.

Inspiration

The countryside of Switzerland is beautiful, and I captured many images while traveling around the country by train. Many trains travel at fairly high speeds so one must use a faster shutter speed. I was mostly up between cars when traveling to be ready to capture the moments.

Editing

i use Lightroom for my initial post processing and then sometimes go to On! Effects for final touches, which is what I did for this photo. In lightroom I made adjustments to the the white balance, shadows, highlights, blacks and whites. I also adjusted the clarity and vibrance mainly for the sky. I then tweaked the the luminance for blues, yellows and orange.

In my camera bag

For this trip I only had one bag and carried the Canon 5D MkII along with the Canon EF 24-105mm lens, Canon EF 70-200 and Canon 16-35 mm F/2.8. This gave me a fairly light bag along with a variety of lenses. I carried the Canon 16-35 F/2.8 mainly for indoor images.

Feedback

For an overseas trip consider how much gear you really need. If you have some time for hiking think about taking a tripod. Also think about shooting indoors in poor light conditions. In this case I was traveling on a moving train and shooting landscapes which made the use of the 24-105mm lens more flexible with distances and good for fast shooting speeds.
