Location
I took this picture in a highland town called El Valle, located in a valley (hence the name) in the province of Cocle, in Panama.Time
It was at sunset, around 5-5:30pm.Lighting
Lighting was all natural, pure sun rays coming through some vegetation illuminating directly this group of orchids within a natural garden. It was kind of harsh it's intensity, and I didn't wanted to use any filter in hopes to keep color tones as intact as possible, so I had to lower ISO and speed up the shutter up to 1/800.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS Rebel T3i, a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens, filterless and handheld. No flash.Inspiration
I was with a group of friends, photographers most of them, visiting this town between the hills and mountains of the province of Cocle, in Panama, famous for gorgeous landscapes, delightful waterfalls, great local food, dense woods, and awesome and intriguing flora and fauna. A perfect place to spend a few days, to rest, relax and fill up hundreds of memory cards. That said, I got inspired the minute I arrived there. How the sun rays would bathe everything around, wooden cabins, rivers, rocks, flowers..Editing
I did very little in post-processing, I loved the way the sun illuminated everything I didn't wanted to disturb that. Just brought a little bit the tones up, sharpness and contrast. In my camera bag
I upgraded to a Canon 6D since this photo was taken, so I carry that instead, along with a Canon 24-105 f4L, a Canon 100 2.8L IS macro, a Sigma 35 1.4 DG arts and a Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX APO DG lenses. Also, polarized filters for each lens, a Neewer flash, a YongNuo ring flash, a couple of diffusers, a remote triggers, and a reflector.Feedback
I try to capture with natural day light as much as I can, love how the sun illuminates things in that special way, turning things golden and warm.. the real challenge is turning all those tones into something different, that's where skills really matters.. hehe I'd advice to play and experiment with day light, enough to make it behave differently than just illuminate a subject. That, and if you want to shoot wildlife best timing is always better in the wee hours of the morning or when the sun is going down at sunset, beautiful day lighting then.
