We had the privilege of watching a mating pair of lions interact, to include before, during, and after. They were surprisingly affectionate and close. Lions mate for 24 to 48 hours, during which time they mate every 20 minutes or so, they do not hunt, they do not eat. We waited for the upcoming mating session and witnessed it, being voyeurs. Except that when it was time, they got up from their nap 30 feet away and came right to our open-topped vehicle and mated within 3 feet, in the shade of the vehicle. That was quite disconcerting, especially since I was eye level with that huge male.
