Nice, I've tried so hard this past week to get one of these shot's. Mine looked nowhere near as good as this. Maybe the wrong kind of snow ;) Well done.

Keep trying! It's definitely worth it in the end. And yes, it takes a particular kind of snow. Where I live, the snow tends to come down in what people here call dollar size snowflakes, but if you look close you'll see that's it's actually a whole ton of snowflakes all bunched up. They bounce around in the atmosphere and get stuck together and when they do, they break up into little tiny pieces. It has to be pretty dry in the air to get them to fall independantly. But sometimes, even when they are slamming into each other, you can find a lone little star that made it without 'dying'. We've had no snow here this year :( Thank you for the compliment!

Nice! I got lucky and woke to a whole windshield full of cousins of your star! Amazing, fragile little critters, eh? Nice catch!

I know how hard it is to get these shots of snowflakes. We had lots of snow this year, but mostly not the right kind. The detail is exquisite.

Thank you! We had zero snow this year so was unable to get anymore this year. But in this area, when we do get snow, it's almost always just little globs and not any actual flakes. So when I do get them, I consider it a rare find and have my butt parked outside taking shots! lol

what great detail--the lines are amazing!
Did you stack? I tried a little but will have to wait for more snow.
liasimcox
liasimcox May 19, 2015
Thank you - yes, this is several images stacked together. This was taken with a reverse lens so you lose a ton of your dof so really the only way to get the whole snowflake is to take several and stack them together. Took lots of practice but very much worth it.

can i ask setting suggestions as a guideline this is what I would like to try this year as my thing to work on!!

Be prepared for a lot of time spent in the cold and not breathing. I don't use a macro lens, just a reversal ring on my 18-55 mm. Each shot is a series of multiple shots all aligned and blended in photoshop. Takes a lot of patience.

This is a great shot! I read some of the comments on here and I understood the not breathing and being cold thing. I haven't tried the reverse lens trick yet. I have a macro of a snowflake (no layering) in my images that I got lucky and found one that didn't melt or break apart from the wind. I did use my 18-55mm lens with a couple of close up rings on the end of my lens to get it, besides trying really hard to stand still. Definitely took many photos but I haven't tried layering yet. Going to have to try that process sometime.
