On my last night in Šibenik, Croatia, I made a run back to Krka National Park to catch Skradinski Buk in evening light as the sun started to drop below the mountains surrounding the Krka River. For a park that closes at 7 PM, and stops the bus service between the valley and the parking lot shortly before, I was planning on playing it safe and catching the 6:30 bus out and avoiding the steep graded hike back to the lot with 40 pounds of gear on my back.
Then I saw this perspective.
I unpacked my gear, set everything up, and took the shot. I then started collapsing everything on the fly as I started power-walking towards the bus stop just in time to see the 6:30 buss roll away. A Serbian-speaking family that I had helped earlier by carrying a stroller over a series of stone steps was similarly approaching in a hurried fashion. Given that the Serbian and Croation languages are so closely intertwined, I decided to ask in my best poor "Znate li je josh jedan autobus?" Do you know if there is another bus? "Neznam" was the reply. They didn't know. Then I saw a park employee approach, so I asked her as well. She laughed a little, the replied in a mix of Croatian and English "I certainly hope so. That's how I was planning on getting up." So I relaxed, waited, packed my gear properly, and caught the 6:50 bus after snagging what may well be one of my best shots of the trip.
