Columnar Basalt is both asymmetrically efficient and aesthetically pleasing to the eye which is unfortunate as we humans have been known to harvest it to enhance our dwellings or to destroy it for road base. Consisting of polygonal shaped columns, primarily hexagons, it demonstrates the efficiency of nature as the hexagon is the most mechanically stable arrangement of forces that are always in balance. Nature loves efficiency, that is why this shape appears when lava cools, contracts and cracks.
