This girl is named Kara.
Kara was born as an accident. Kara was never supposed to take her first breath. Kara was not supposed to live.
Kara was born four months early to a woman who was more concerned about her next high rather than the life that was growing inside of her. When she was born, Kara's head exploded three times because of the pressure of birth and the fluid that had built up inside of it. Within the first few months of Kara's life, she was not expected to make it past the age of ten. And if she did pass the one year mark, she was destined for a life in a crib. For life in a wheel chair. She was destined to live a life of exceptional retardation.
But, Kara. Kara is a fighter. Kara is a survivor and Kara is a miracle.
Kara is now a fourteen year old young lady who will be making her way into high-school. She has excelled far past the expectations set upon her and she has spent the last four years on the honor role. She is caring, considerate, funny, kind and an amazing older sister. She lives with her adoptive family surrounded by love and possibilities. She will never give up.
But despite all of Kara's success and accomplishments, she is still constantly teased by those who don't know her because she is different. Kara is autistic and so loud noises frighten her and overwhelm her. Her body does not look like those around her and some times it takes her a while to understand the world around her. People look at her and the word "retarded" flashes across their minds. This needs to stop.
Kara is more than her conditions and her struggles. She is a person with an incredible light in the world and I could not be more proud to be her sister.
Congratulations for finishing middle school and heading to highschool Miss Kara!! I can't wait to see what you accomplish next.
