Taken Friday near Stanford Montana. Kyle and I decided to make the drive to Montana to watch storms, my mother accepted the invite to join us. I noticed when the smaller storms hit Stanford, they blew up, so we went back to sit and watch. Then this happened!! We watched it grow from a small storm into this beast over the mountain, heading straight for us. I had to ask my mother “can you see this from in the truck?” – she got out, and was as amazed at what we were looking at as we were.

Absolutely fantastic capture. The colors are right-on, reproducing the mood that Mother was in just at that moment. I love it. I've never seen a formation quite like this, EVER! I am curious what she finally wound up going and doing. Masterful! Thanks!

What a great shot! I have been a storm chaser for 38 years now... I must say that you were in the right place at the right time! I wish I had been there to witness it. Just to let you know, the glowing blue-green that can be seen in the upper section of the storm is hail. You had mentioned that the storm was headed right for you... hopefully, you did not get caught in it or end up with a cracked windshield. Wind patterns around mountains are much different than those around the lower elevations- that is why hikers must be diligent about keeping tabs on the weather. Be safe- if you see blue-green in the storm, take shelter- but not in a place that has narrowed/enclosed sections (think of how a vacuum works). Updrafts in storms become very strong, carrying frozen rain back up into the highest parts of a storm, over & over again. Hail stones have been reported/photographed that are bigger than a baseball. Those updrafts can become tornadoes when conditions are right. When you see hail, a funnel/tornado is either developing or may have touched down- but may be hidden behind heavy rain bands. Living in Florida, dangerous pulse storms develop suddenly and without warning. Visitors have experienced close calls- I have helped people (that were walking) on high span bridges get to safety, or had to alert beachgoers of dangerous situations... they forgot to check the weather forecast, they weren’t watching the weather around them, or the storm developed suddenly & without warning. Storms can hide what is on the othe side of heavy rain bands...
