The lights were out in Fairbanks as early as 5:00 pm. I headed north on the Steese Highway about 7:30 and was simply looking for somewhere to stop that would provide a more interesting foreground than a typical "dark mountain and bright sky" lights photo. As I drove by these stairs (leading to a restroom), I knew exactly the photo I wanted.
I first experimented with light painting the railing, but I was unhappy with how that was turning out. After half an hour or so, a car passed so I started playing with using the headlights/tail lights to get the effect I wanted. It took probably a dozen or so cars before I finally got the timing right, etc., but it was more than worth it.
