Devnish round tower is reputed to be the finest surviving example of a defensive round tower.The monks would shelter in the tower which has its entrance door up about 25 feet above the ground which was reached by a ladder which was then pulled up into the tower. The raiders mostly pagan tribes or Vikings were left unable to reach the defenders who had the advantage of hight and could hold out for a long time.

This reminds me of the movie The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Love that movie. My dad always wanted to see Ireland where his people first came from. He never got to except in that movie. There is a lovely, almost sad feeling about this photo. I love it.
