When capturing moments, experimenting with exposures is one of the best ways to create interesting and dynamic images. One of YouTube's original YouTube's original "coolhunters," Mia is now the head of the creator community at Flipboard and the community manager for the photography vertical. She's new to taking pictures herself but has long had a curator's eye for what's interesting and deserves to be surfaced. (She curated Burning Man's Instagram account for several years, which she helped to grow to more than 1 million followers.) Mia is also the producer and host of Flipboard's podcast, "The Art of Curation", and loves to study the role of human taste in a tech-driven world. When capturing moments, experimenting with exposures is one of the best ways to create interesting and dynamic images. You should explore the various effects of using slow shutter speeds to blur action or faster shutters to freeze it. It’s amazing how these settings can transform a photo, so experimenting with them often leads us to find new, exciting results! Experiment moving your camera, capturing multiple exposures and play with light trails. This kind of experimentation allows us to draw attention to different details as well as making an otherwise standard shot much more eye-catching.

White Is Empty, Black Is Full

When working with multiple exposures, you can control the frame area where the second exposure will be visible by remembering that phrase. The most extreme example of this would be a black silhouette shot against a pure white background: the silhouette will be filled with your second exposure while the background will remain white and empty. Areas in between will vary in opacity depending on how light or dark they are.
