This photo was made on Munger Road in Emmet County, Michigan. You can see the trees marked with red are about to be harvested. I have hunted in this stand of pines since it was first planted. Raising pine is a multimillion-dollar business that constitutes essential portions of the U.S. lumber and paper industries. But it has a major economic drawback: It can take 35 years or more for a stand to mature and turn a profit. If a landowner plants five acres of pine trees today and manages it the way it should be managed, he or she can expect a return of $25,000-plus -- it could be much more than that -- when it matures at 35 years of age.
