When I created this photo, which was part of an ongoing series, it wasn't about following the crowd, or traveling hundreds of miles to see something that has been seen and photographed by hundreds of others. It was all about discovering and uncovering my own unique voice, my own unique vision and definition of beauty. I had given myself a challenge to find this unknowable thing within my own back yard, without even knowing what it was other than having the certainty I would succeed in my mission.
This is the south haven lighthouse after a winter storm. The mystical magic of winter :) Now the question you should ask yourself is simple. Do you recall a time in your life when you were absolutely amazed by something ? Well this was one of many times I was amazed. Ironically, it doesn't matter how many times I see it, it never gets old for me. This particular phenomenon only happens under certain conditions, so it's rare to see this much ice buildup at this location, as it doesn't happen every year to this degree, and yet the anticipation of what might be is a major draw for many each and every winter. Thanks for taking the time to view, favor, and comment, I hope you enjoy the view as much as I did.
As an interesting side note, not only has certain photo's in the frozen lighthouse series won awards through other competitions, I was also represented by a global media company who arranged publishing through their global contacts.
One of the last to buy the publishing rights was of all places Disney :)

thanks, but when I come across something like this I loose track completely and get lost in the experience of being there. It's like, nothing else seems to matter in that moment. I had the same exact experience when I started developing this series. Ironically it was more or less a spin off of my love of storms. I was actually standing on the beach 3 weeks before getting this, and from what I understand it was one of the worst storms to hit the area in years and yet I felt that exact sense of wonder, no fear, just a profound state of peace.

What a magnificent shot! The intensity of the snow and ice brings me to a chill even though I sit pool side in 100 degree weather. A true artist brings the observer into the shot feeling as if they are there....which you have done in this photograph. Extremely talented shooting here!

One of my favorite lighthouses to visit. My wife and I included it on our lighthouse tour of Michigan. Love your capture of this iconic lighthouse.
