As I was driving through the southern coast of France, I knew my journey would bring me to meet the recently wild Camargue horses in the tiny town of St. Maries de la Mer. Here they are cared for by the gypsy people who call themselves Guardians, as they try to protect the animal's wild spirit. It was amazing to watch the level of affection and admiration these Camargue cowboys have for the horses. Even their youngest children demonstrate impressive horsemanship skills some of which are the best natural bareback riders I've ever seen. They even reward the horses with a special treat: French baguettes!
These horses are born gray or brown and as they become adults, at the age of three years, their beautiful white coat comes in. You can see that the
mare furthest to the right still has a gray coat.
