Standing next to a lava lake is one of the most humbling experiences one can go through in life. It is a stark reminder of how small we all are, of what constantly lurks below our feet; a boiling furnace that peeks through at these impressive open air pools of molten rock.
The effort required just to get here might qualify as quite the experience by itself: Erta Ale is located in the middle of the Afar desert of Ethiopia, one of the hottest places on the planet, but it's mighty worth to visit.
