Before anyone gets overly worried about the little girl, this is a composite photo. The wild elephants with their young calf as the center of the herd's attention were photographed in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, while the little girl I photographed quite separately at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage on the outskirts of Nairobi where she was indeed watching elephants but from a safe distance. Note that while the shadows of the girl and the calf are almost lined up parallel to each other they are in the opposite direction.
