I didn't think I'd ever see these again- where I grew up in England our family used to pick chestnuts for winter roasts over an open fire! Where I went to school, Epping forest was opposite the schoolyard. This is where we were allowed to play on recess. For musement, kids would drag one of us with arms outstretched, harvesting mounds of chestnut and especially beech leaves. We enjoyed fresh beech nuts whenever they were available. No-one was ever afraid of kiddie mashers. A wonderful childhood.
