Sculpture of the Prophet Joel, made by Antônio Francisco Lisboa, better known as Aleijadinho. He was an important sculptor, carver and architect in 18th century Brazil. His style is related to Baroque and Rococo. He is considered by Brazilian critics almost unanimously as the greatest exponent of colonial art in Brazil. This sculpture of the prophet Joel, made in soapstone between the years 1800 and 1805, is exposed outdoors, in the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, an architectural complex located in the Brazilian municipality of Congonhas, state of Minas Gerais, together with the statues of 11 Old Testament prophets.
