"After viewing the entries a number of times, there were many images that were simply beautiful. There were images that were unique, stunning in their own way, and many that were sweet and heartwarming, or that evoked a lot of emotion⌠something that scores a lot of points with me. In the end, however, I had to keep coming back to the original theme of the contest⌠entries that truly embodied both the âPowerâ as well as the âGraceâ of horses in one image, which is not an easy task.
I had to eliminate a number of photos because they embodied either âpowerâ or âgraceâ, but not both at the same time. And many were very sweet or touching, but did not really portray power or grace. After several final rounds, I finally chose âPrince of the Plainsâ as the winner. The combination of landscape, dark dramatic sky, overall composition, andt he overall âfeelâ of power, pride, dignity, independence and spirit... all comes together to create one powerful and provocative image. To me, this image captures the essence of the horse completely. The runner up choices also embody the same qualities⌠both raw power and true grace."
