Macro Butterflies Photo Contest Winners

A special thanks to our friend and professional photographer Laurie Rubin for her collaboration as a guest judge in this photo contest. Laurie Rubin is an international award-winning photographer, specializing in wildlife, zoo and aerial photography. She won 1st place in the Windland Smith Rice International awards with her print displayed in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. Her passion for photography includes a career working for software companies such as Education Project Manager for Nik Software, Product Specialist for Google+ Photos, Senior Education Manager at Macphun Software, and ViewBug. She is one of the first Inception Masters for Trey Ratcliff’s Arcanum, and speaks at events and teaches workshops. She enjoys flying and taking aerial photos with her DJI Phantoms.

"I kept coming back to this image because it really stood out from a lot of the other photos of butterflies that were perched on a stem or flower. This was very unusual. The butterfly was on a surface of some kind (I keep trying to figure out what it was) with beautiful pastel purples and golds. The composition was really nice too with the butterfly off to the right a bit so it was a bit off center, giving this image a bit more tension. The bokeh is lovely too. "This image is so much fun and whimsical, and again, it really stood out as being very different from the many other butterfly photos. "This is such a simple yet elegant image of the butterfly perched on a flowerhead as it bends over gracefully. The technique of shooting through and around the plants in the background is really nice and almost looks as though a texture was added. Beautiful pastel colors with a punch of purple and nice sharpness on the main subject. This is a really beautiful image!" - Laurie Rubin
