Here is something we can learn from danielkukec about the techniques and story behind this awarded photo.
danielkukec is a Kiwi living in Sydney Australia. Taking a photo a day keeps him on his toes.  He loves that ViewBug.com keeps him creatively nourished with not only ideas, but contests to feed his photographic addiction.

1. danielkukec, where did you take this photo?

The photo was taken at Pitt Street Mall, Sydney CBD, Australia.

2. What time of day?

About 2pm.

3. Anything worth sharing about lighting?

It was a very overcast day. The light was diffuse, with a subtle direction.

4. What equipment did you use?

For this shot I used my canon 50d and tamron 70-200 f2.8. No other equipment was used.

5. What inspired you to take this photo?

I was out practising street photography, and observing people during the busy christmas shopping period. I just wanted to capture something powerful and then came across this guy.

6. Did you do any post-processing? if yes, tell us about it!

Yes. Initial processing in ACR CS6 with slight tweak to exposure, and a healthy dose of clarity. I then took the image to Photoshop and actioned the B&W conversion, followed by extracting detail via a NIK effects filter. Following this I used a large number of levels layer adjustments for contrast.

7. What equipment do you normally have in your bag?

Canon 6d body, and canon 50d body. Tamron (24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8) and canon lenses (50 f1.4, 17-40 f4).

8. Any advice for others trying to capture something similar?

The advice i would give is to work on your observation skills. Go out and take lots of photos of people. Think about composition too, and walk around your subject to get the best angle. I actually observed this guy for a while and got multiple images, including drinking, smoking, and with people walking around him.
