Here is something we can learn from awu88 about the techniques and story behind this awarded photo.

1. awu88,where did you take this photo?

Pier 14, San Francisco.

2. What time of day?

Sunset blue hour.

3. Anything worth sharing about lighting?

Well I knew that the fog was rolling in over the hills so I figured it would be cool to have it as the backdrop 'softbox' for the city lights I was going to photograph. I also knew that the crescent moon was going to be in the direction I was shooting at. But I didn't expect to be exactly in the center of the pier walkway... so that was really nice.
The fog rolling in diffused the lights on the top of the building & created a glowing effect. So in essence there were 3 light sources: the city lights, the moon, & the fading light of blue hour.

4. What equipment did you use?

Nikon D800, 14-24mm. Tripod mounted of course.

5. What inspired you to take this photo?

I knew the city lights look incredible from this location from previous visits, & I had envisioned to shoot when the fog was rolling in & moon was in the right position. I think the overall mood which represents SF well is what I wanted to achieve & is what inspired me.

6. Did you do any post-processing? if yes, tell us about it!

Minor corrections in shadows, colors, & sharpness.

7. What equipment do you normally have in your bag?

D800
24-70mm
14-24mm
70-200mm
ND filters
Polarizer

8. Any advice for others trying to capture something similar?

Look at others work to get the sense of the location, but try to capture it in a different light & condition to achieve your pre-visualized shots. Keep practicing... theres always something else to do or improve on. Learn how to work your particular camera VERY well so u can adjust settings fast in field! Good light doesnt wait!
