Love how the dogs are facing the camera and the girl is not - great twist on the standard pet/owner shot!

An absolutely sweet shot….a girl and her three best friends. The best aspect is that this shot has a story behind it.

Location
I took this photo where I use to live in Fort Collins.Time
I always shoot at the end of the day. This photo was done in late August 2013 around 6:00-7:00 pmLighting
There was a storm coming so we had to shoot quickly. Lots of cloud coverage, I did not use a flash.Equipment
I use a Canon Mark 5D III, and a 24-70 L lens. I think this was shot with my old 7D however I got the new camera a couple months later.Inspiration
I love adopting dogs, I've rescued many over the years. I use to volunteer in the shelters. The idea that an animal had been left behind or thrown away greatly saddens me. There's something that makes me feel safe when they're around so I could never understand how many people didn't care for them. That being said, there was a little Tibetan Spaniel I fell in love with at the shelter. The owner for the house we were renting said no to me adopting her. I got a friend to take her until our lease was up (she is with us now). The owner of the house was a monster towards us and when we left I felt like we were running away from something awful. The idea of "running away" and "not leaving without them" "were all in this together" stuck in my head.Editing
I do lots of photoshopping on my photos. I did a few versions of these photos and altered them all differently, lots of color but still a yellowing/warmth that gives the photo a vintage feeling without being obviously vintage. The dogs all had leashes on them so I had to photoshop those out. I was pretty lucky that the dogs were so good and my daughter is great at handling them.In my camera bag
In my bag I have a Canon 5D Mark III, 24-70L lens, two 600 Speedlites, a 50 mm 1.4, 85mm, a Canon 7D and a 10-22 wide angled lens.Feedback
My advice for people is to always find something that is dear to your heart. I went to UCLA art school and the teachers told us "no kids, no animals". But what did Mary Cassatt paint?…Children. I spent 20 years painting rock stars and nudes, it wasn't until I had a child that I clicked in with what I held dear. I hold dear innocence. I love to take care of animals and children. I love storytelling, fairy tales and magic that makes all the pain and suffering go away. I believe if you get really excited about whatever it is that you love, the ideas will come. I say look close to home, start small and just keep going, keep shooting, keep studying other's work, you can never learn enough
