This photo was taken in my backyard in Athens, Ga. No, sadly I was not on the set of Star Wars Episode 8. That would have a been a dream.Time
I had just gotten home from class late afternoon and a friend came over to show off his new stormtrooper mask. I immediately got my camera and some smoke bombs and began shooting.Lighting
Since my backyard is not much of a background that would intrigue the eye, I wanted to add something to the frame where it would be blocked out. Smoke was the perfect answer and reflected perfectly against the sun.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark iii with a Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens.Inspiration
My goal in photography is to take surreal photos in ordinary places. Making it look like the photo was taken on alien planet in the Star Wars universe is a feat that may be hard to pull off without a big budget set. I enjoy coming up with ways to pull it off without spending a fortune.Editing
The smoke in the photo was real as I try to use practical effects as much as possible. I edited the photo in Adobe Lightroom to add more contrast and color to give it a more erie look.In my camera bag
I will never leave the house without my 50mm f/1.8 lens. Its ability to capture natural light is incredible and I'd recommend it to any photographer. I also pack my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. I do a lot of nature photography which requires me to travel very lightly. If I can't travel 20 miles on foot with it, I wont bring it. Thats why I only bring my camera, two lenses, and many batteries.Feedback
Always use practical effects if you can. Photography is about capturing the truth that this world has to offer. It doesn't take a Hollywood budget to create something incredible. Just use your head and be creative.
