Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in far west Texas.

Time

The summer monsoon season always makes for gorgeous, golden hour and sunsets in these parts.

Lighting

I used to avoid shots with starbursts and/or lens flare effects, over time I came to realize how effective they can be in setting the tone and mood of an image.

Equipment

The image was taken with a D7100, Tokina 11-16mm.

Inspiration

I went out in hopes of capturing daytime lightning, but the magnificent golden light made me switch focus to the horizon rather quickly.

Editing

I try to keep post processing to a minimum, however the flatness of the NEF files allows one to tweak the white balance and contrast to bring out the depth and texture of an image without "over-cooking."

In my camera bag

For landscapes I carry an 18-200mm and the 11-16mm. I also had my ND filters in the bag in case the lightning decided to fire.

Feedback

West Texas and southern New Mexico can literally offer all four seasons in a single day, the best advice I can offer is to be prepared to shoot in any situation or expect the unexpected.
