She is one of the Aethereans; angelic, monk-like beings who live high in the mountains of DreamWorld where they can pursue their spiritual quests in peace. They are skilled healers and highly sought-after councilors. Many of the fae send their children to the Aethereans to be taught love, spirituality empathy, animal care, plant lore, sacred geometry and the mysteries of the universe. Location
Just in my back yard! I actually chose the low angle because it left the fence in the background out of frame.Time
This was shot later than I usually do natural light images, around noon or 1:00. I tend to prefer golden and blue hour light. But for whatever reason, I ended up shooting this quite later and on an extremely sunny day, so I decided to steer into all that light for a change.Lighting
The sun did all the hard work, I just positioned my model to be in front of it! There was no additional light source at all.Equipment
I used my Nikon D5100 and acted as my own tripod lying on the ground to get the exact angle and framing that I wanted.Inspiration
This image is part of my ongoing series DreamWorld, which explores the land we visit in sleep. The idea of these monk-like, angelic characters living high in the mountains came to me, and I wanted to capture that.Editing
I probably edited out a little bit of fence that snuck into most of the bottom of these images. I used the Selective Color function to cool down the tones of this image, making it quite a bit more blue-toned than it was straight out of the camera. I also added a sacred geometry symbol to Teri's, the model's, forehead, which was something I hadn't thought of doing until after the shoot was over!In my camera bag
I usually carry my Nikon D5100 and D810 bodies, a prime 50 lens, a prime 35 lens, a 70-300 lens and sometimes an even larger zoom lens if I'm after wildlife shots. I also carry a variety of gels and small, translucent objects like irridecent plastic snowflakes and water bottle tops to shoot through for interesting effects. Also backup batteries and more memory cards than any one person could ever want at one time!Feedback
Really embrace the sun and the lens flares that will naturally happen! Try to find a space with as much open sky as possible and don't be afraid to get dirty and lay on the ground for the right angle. In this set of images, I wanted to keep everything bright, light and ethereal, so having a blond-haired model in a white lace dress worked well for me, but playing up contrasts with a model of deeper complexion would also be beautiful! And remember, if your shots end up a bit more warm toned than you want, you can always cool them off in post!
