Behind The Lens

Location

this photo was taken in one of Singapore Nature Trails at Venus drive.

Time

I and my friends always do the macro photography in the early morning. we always set a date every weekend for macro shoot. i can't forget this shot and still remember how adorable this little spider was during that time. he keep on posing, as like he knew he was taken a picture that time. this photo was taken November 8, 2012 around 7am-8am.

Lighting

actually, during our macro shoot we don't use any lighting except for an external flash and we always depend in the natural light. i was just lucky on this shot because it was just a timing that the spider was on a yellow color leaf that made the lighting stand-out.

Equipment

this was shot with canon eos550d, with EF100mm F2.8L IS USM, and an external yungno speedlite. it was taken handheld because its very rare i used a tripod when shooting macro. and oopss, before i forgot i also used a 3rd party ext tube.

Inspiration

what inspired me to take this photo? actually i was just starting to learn photography the time i took this shot. i was fascinated by some macro shots i saw in youtube and amazed how insects looks when up-close. even s simple house fly, i didn't know before that is has a very beautiful eyes. when i saw a photo of a peacock jumping spider that really made me into macro photography but unfortunately we doesn't have that here in Singapore.

Editing

yes, i did some post processing but not the processing you think. some photographer do a photo stacking or some used different photo and layer it in photoshop. for me it's juts a normal processing. i always used the Raw file and start adjusting from it. then i will used a plug-in (NIK software) to make the color stands-out. and thats it, normally it will take only 15mins for me to edit my photos weather its a landscape or macro photo.

In my camera bag

since this photo was taken almost 4 years ago, i already gave my camera (eos550d) to my brother. last year i have upgraded my camera to canon 5dmkiii, and i really love this camera. the shots where so different from my old camera. it really made it easy for me to edit my photos because the output photo was really awesome. if i am going for macro, normally i brought my EF100mm F2.8L IS USM lens and my secondhand canon580ex flash and my 3rd party ext tube for the closer shot of my subject. if i am going for a landscape, i have on my bag my EF16-35F2.8L II USM and some Lee Filters and one C-polarizer and of-course a tripod.

Feedback

my only tips when shooting macro, always shoot in the early morning. insects behave differently in the afternoon. most insect hunting time is at around 8am-10am. and always used an ext tube to have a close-up shot of your subject. but the best advice, edit your photos naturally, don't over edit, yes photo stacking is really nice to give you more details but for me who will believe you that your photo is real or not. just a natural shot, edit a little thats it.
