Location
This is the 'famous' Wanaka Tree, photographed many many times byt visitors from all over the world. It is an old fence post located on the edge of Lake Wanaka in the South Island of New Zealand. Over the years it has sprouted into this treeTime
As is common for taking a shot of 'that tree' I arrived well before dawn to capture it in the early light. The sunrise was quite average on the morning in question however the lake was calm and I captured this in the blue light before sun up. I was first on the scene and it was still quite dark when I arrived, however before long there were another 5 or 6 photographers setting up their tripods. By the time the sun had risen there would have been at least 12 or 15 visitors getting their photos also.Lighting

Shot with a Canon 6D and a 24-70 lens at 64mm, f8 and a 30 second expossure.Inspiration
I was travelling around the stunning South Island of New Zealand for work and didn't have anywhere near enough time to get the camera out. Actually the only spare time I had was pre dawn - so it made sense to get up early and try to capture the Wanaka Tree. Although as many photographers do, I like to look for original subjects to shoot, I still wanted to get my own shot of the tree. Google 'That Tree, Wanaka' and you'll find plenty of other great examples.Editing
Post processing in Camera Raw including a minor exposure adjustment, and a significant lift in the shadows to bring out the foreground, and just a few other small tweeks. Cropping to a square format seemed to work best.In my camera bag
The Canon 6D is my go to camera body for landscapes and I have the 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 lenses which all get used regularly when out and about. I also have a selection of graduated Cokin Graduated Filters and a 10 stop neutral density filter which I will often use in the early dawn to capture the magic light. I also work with a Canon 7D mark 2 which give me a little more flexibility wildlife shots.Feedback
The best advise I can give for capturing an image like this is to get up and get out there early. Well before the sun rises. It might also pay to scout out the location the day before and work out where the early morning light will start appearing. The colors in the early morning sky can be quite spectacular and although I often struggle to get up pre dawn, It is nearly always worth it for the type of images that can be captured. I would also recommend getting a neutral density filter. This will help lengthen the exposure times which soften the water and bring out the colors.
