Behind The Lens

Location

Lake Aloha, in Desolation Wilderness. Part of the Eastern Sierra's in California

Time

Hike in from Echo Summit at 6:00 am arrived by noon but waited till late afternoon (about 4) for the sun to move toward the back

Lighting

Time of day is especially important in Black and White imagery. Patience, waiting for a cloud to pass a shadow on the mountain, with darkening the sky.

Equipment

Nikon D800e Sigma 24-70 f/2.8, tripod, remote trigger, mirror up

Inspiration

I've been hiking and shooting Desolation Wilderness for the past couple of years. This summer, with all the snow I'm going to be doing a few overnighters to catch first rays and the magic hour

Editing

McPhun software has a program called "Tonality" for conversion to black and white

In my camera bag

Long (more than 10 miles) hikes require that you don't overpack. D800e, Sigma 24-70 /f2.8, Sigma 15-30 /f3.5-4, Rokinion 14MM /2.8, Remote shutter, tripod
