Location
I shot the photo in the front hallway of my apartment. Not exactly a romantic or imaginative spot, but it did the trick!Time
I took this photo in the afternoon.Lighting
Interestingly enough, I actually shot this photo in the early afternoon, indoors, with no auxiliary lighting. I'm actually pretty amazed that it turned out the way it did.Equipment
I shot this photo with a Nikon D5100 and a Nikon DX 35mm f/1.8 lens on a tripod, using a handheld IR remote.Inspiration
I've aways had a penchant for mens fashion, and I also find it fun to take a self-portrait every now and again. I had just gotten a new haircut, but then decided to take a photo with a hat on, just to add a bit of mystique. I love textures, and so the wool hat and tie along with the beard made for what I think is an eye-catching combination.Editing
I fiddled with the color and saturation levels, and then turned the photo B&W and added a small amount of fine grain to it.In my camera bag
Nowadays I usually shoot more with my mirrorless camera and bright lens, an Olympus OM-D EM10 with a 17mm (34mm in 35mm equivalent) f/1.8 lens. I carry at least a small travel tripod with me, and also have a zoom lens and a macro lens. Sometimes I find it most fun to explore without equipment and try to get a good shot with my iPhone camera.Feedback
Take a moment to make sure that everything is proper; that is, straighten out any wrinkles, stand up straight, brush off lint, etc. Use a clean background, but one that also shows a small amount of texture and shows shadows tastefully.
