Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my home studio based in Tadley, Hampshire.

Time

It was probably some point around lunchtime as i remember being really hungry and knowing that i can't eat until i captured something cool. I definitely ate that day.

Lighting

The lighting is the most interesting part as you depend on so much of it being back lit from the fire. And with all drink photography you try to get a smooth and even light coming through the product to give it a more appealing look, but dealing with fire it makes it impossible so you look for the tonal changes that you get from the heat of the flames. That is what makes this shot look good. But you also have a table to highlight and with all product photography thats the most important part so set up with two soft boxes on a low-medium setting set up either side looking towards the camera, not the product i used a large piece of white foam board to bounce the light back in to the product to allow for a much smoother and light reflection on the table so that the Disaronno writing on the lid doesn't get washed out.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 5D (I know, old camera but still awesome) EF 24-70mm f4L and for lighting i used the awesome power of fire and the Pixapro Lumi 200 strobe lights.

Inspiration

I love fire and think it looks awesome and wanted to do something incorporated with my product photography and after trying out a shot where i lit an ice cube on fire i knew it would look good.

Editing

As fire moves unpredictably i had to use three different shots as the fire looked best in those three and made a composite of them to give the final image.

In my camera bag

My current bag consists of Canon EOS 5DS, Canon EOS 700D, EF 70-200 f2.8 II L, EF 24-70 f4 L, EF 17-40 f4L, EF 100 f2.8 L Macro, EF 85 f1.8. Also i have a bunch of Cokin filters and batteries.

Feedback

Just do it. you just need a camera and lens and some extra lights. nothing fancy as nothing crazy happens light high speed capturing. Just remember fire is dangerous so use a baking tray (what i did) for the base so you have something fire resistant. And when you use lighter fluid don't pray it on while the flames are burning.
