I took this image of a retained leaf cluster on the hedge in my yard. We had a freezing fog event early that morning and I went out to shoot before the sun would have a chance to melt the ice crystals. I wandered aimlessly around the yard taking in all the beauty of one of nature's slightly more unusual weather events.Time
I remember I shot this image around 9 AM in December of last year because I had skipped my coffee after looking through the window at what had occurred. After bundling up, I held my camera under my jacket and headed outdoors to see what the freezing fog had left in its wake. I shot images of branches, pine cones, metal sculptures, Christmas light bulbs, frosted strings of cobwebs and even a pair of pants that had been left outside hanging on a clothes line. It was a very amazing experience seeing everything with fancy decorative edges and sometimes windswept to just one side.Lighting
The lighting and contrast that existed in its pure form was perfect for this capture. I loved the orange and rust colored shades rimmed in crystals with the background of other blurred freezing fog creations. It was just a good balance of lighting and contrast that was controlled solely by Mother Nature.Equipment
I use a Canon EOS Rebel T4i with a EFS 18-135mm IS. I am an amateur and continually try to become more comfortable with all this camera is able to do. Details for this image are: f/5.6 1/1,000 ISO 1,000 93mm.Inspiration
I am drawn to taking photos of anything! When this phenonmenon presented itself, I thought I might get some good shots and I did get quite a few that reflected the beauty of nature. The freezing fog crystals formed on the edges of everything and getting in close was very "cool". While I did not take this image for a particular contest, I love how both the leaf color and the crystals reflect the "Fire & Ice" theme of the contest in which it was entered.Editing
I applied minimal sharpness and saturation to this image. Nature did the rest.In my camera bag
I also carry a Canon EFS 55-250mm IS, a Canon 1:2.8 USM Macro and a Canon 50mm 1:1.4 Prime. I enjoy sometimes using my 80mm clear globe ball, when I think of it! I have much to learn but with each session I feel I gain knowledge and improve my skills.Feedback
My biggest piece of advice is patience. Oh, and taking way more of certain subjects you think you might really like. It is easy to delete images but not so easy to wish you had just moved over a tad or zoomed in more (or less) among other regrets. Having lots of choices of a particular image you like is a good thing. I keep telling myself that as the hard drive continues to fill up. But that makes me happy. Mother Nature is not that predictable at times so, plan for some things and then for the other opportunities, skip the coffee, grab the camera and go!
