Behind The Lens

Location

Taken at the boat docks in Steveston Village, BC Canada.

Time

Taken in November at about 9:45 am.

Lighting

Their was heavy fog in the air and the sun was just rising across the waterway. The lighting was somewhat subdued.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D700 camera with a 70-200mm telephoto lense, all mounted on a Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

It was a quiet, motionless, cold and damp frigid morning, with heavy fog in the air. On a pier that jutted out into the waterway, a number of fisherman were spread out at regular intervals with their fishing lines in a variety of positions; from being made ready to be cast, or being pulled in, to just waiting for a bite to happen. With the sun rising across the waterway and the mystical way in which the group of fisherman presented themselves in the light, each of these elements made for a great picture in my mind.

Editing

I post process 90% of my images with Lightroom software, and when required I further process images using Adobe Photoshop software.

In my camera bag

On a planned photoshoot, I normally carry all of my photo equipment with me. This includes a Nikkor 70-200mm zoom lense, a Nikkor 14-28mm wide angle lense, a Nikkor 1.4X tele extender, a Nikkor 105mm macro lense, a Nikkor 35-80mm zoom lense and a Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

Sometimes the worst of weather is the best time to take outdoor pictures. A case in point is when I took this particular photo. I had to wake up extremely early (to catch the rising sun), it was cold and damp (requiring me to wear extra clothing), and their was heavy fog in the air (making for difficult driving conditions). So, if you want to get great shots, you sometimes have to make sacrifices.
