Location
I took this photo on a journey through the US southwest in Monument Valley. This subject is a famous sight there called Ear of the Wind. Problem here is, that you can only get there with a Navajo guide and so the time is limited.Time
As we started our tour through the Valley after lunch, the weather was quite bad with a dark sky and a big chance of rain. During the tour, the sky cleared up a little bit and as we arrived at this spot the sun was shining, casting a light shadow on the sand in the foreground of the image. I don't know the exact time, it must have been at about 4 p.m. i think.Lighting
My intention was to catch the light through this arch. As the whole subject was in shade and light from behind, the smooth lightened foreground works as a leading point into the subject.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 450D and a Sigma 18-200mm at 18mm, f/8, 1/250 sec., ISO 100Inspiration
By planning our road trip, i searched for some popular sights and spots and this was one of them. I had not planed this shot, it was more a spontaneous shot. I searched quite a bit for a nice composition and came up with this one. If i could photograph it one more time, i think i would go there at sunset and put it into a little bit different composition.Editing
Basic adjustments as color temperature and contrast were made in Lightroom. also did some dodging and burning to the light-spot in the foreground. This was not that visible on the picture as i noticed it there. Also gave some warmer, orange color to the overall arch.In my camera bag
Currently my Sigma 10-20 f 4-5.6 is my go to lens and always in my bag. Additional my 50mm 1.4 i use for some closer shots. This two with a Canon 70-200 f4 are the best friends of my Canon EOS 70D. Another important equipment in my bag are my ND and CPL filters. As tripod i am using a Rollei C6i with a Fotopro FPH620 Ball-head.Feedback
As i was limited in time, i would suggest to give you more time than i had to shoot. Try different compositions, angles and exposures. Maybe go there more times to capture different moods and light situations. If you are shooting a sight that's highly frequented, try to go there early in the morning or a little bit later the day to avoid a lot of people in your pictures.
