Location
This photo was taken on an impromptu photoshoot with one of my good friends & frequent model. We stopped on the side of the road in the middle of a November snowstorm.Time
I took this portrait near sunset (4 pm in late November). Once we got back to the car, the sky was dark and we were soaking.Lighting
The snow swirling around us was so reflective that it kept an even exposure on her face, though it was cloudy and near sunset. I positioned her facing away from the trees to add some interest to the background.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Nikon d750 with my favorite lens - the 85mm 1.8.Inspiration
Late in November and far from my usual client work, I was wanting to do something more creative. As soon as I saw a snowstorm on the radar, I texted my friend asking if she would like to model and told her to channel Snow-White for outfits and makeup. 30 minutes later, we found a spot on the side of the road and went for it!Editing
There were a few main items that I post-processed in this image: exposure, color correction, and skin retouching. There was a yellow cast on her face that I corrected, and I bumped the exposure a few stops. In my camera bag
My Nikkor 85mm 1.8 is my ultimate portrait workforce. I love the length that it allows me to stand away from my clients during sessions. My second favorite lens to always be found in my bag is the Sigma 50mm ART. Occasionally, I'll carry my Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8 and my extension tubes for macro pictures. Proof that you can take cool pictures without a $5,000 lens! :)Feedback
My advice to those looking to capture something similar: be spontaneous. Keep your creativity, and make time for it outside of client work. Don't be afraid of adverse weather and find models that won't mind exploring either. Make things fun!
