Location
I took this photo in an ancient temple in Bagan, Myanmar last year. Bagan as a location in general is magical. The light, the people, the scenery - it's all spectacular. I also had the most fantastic guide who knew all the hidden away places that no one else knew of and it was because of him we found this temple, locked away from most tourists and far enough off the beaten track that it felt like stepping back in time.Time
This was taken early/mid morning and the sun had risen high enough to sneak its way through the window at just the right angle and was soft enough to delicately light the scene.Lighting
My guide's knowledge of photography was instrumental in making my trip the success it was and his knowledge of what time of day would produce what types of light helped inspire me to take this image and many more. The shot was lit with natural light streaming in from the nearby window, but we emphasised the light rays with incense and dust.Equipment
Canon 5D Mk III, Canon 24-70 USM II 2.8 lens, hand held.Inspiration
After catching the sunrise at a nearby pagoda my guide hurried me along to this location, promising me the best light I had ever seen. I certainly wasn't disappointed! We didn't have long before the light began to change , so with added urgency, light shafts streaming in and wafted incense enhancing the rays, I was able to capture this shot of the young monks reading. Everything about the scene inspired me - the location, the light, the monks themselves and the feeling we had discovered this secret little corner of Bagan that felt hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. There was a definite sense of urgency so I made the necessary exposure and temperature adjustments, snapped, readjusted the framing for better composition, shifted myself to ensure the light rays were at the best angle, tweaked the temperature and snapped again. it wasn't actually until I was in the edit that i realised it was one of my best shots of the day! The subject of this shot is two young monks from a nearby monastery. In Myanmar all young boys are required to become monks. After a certain amount of time they can make the decision to continue being a monk or whether they want to leave the monastery. These young monk were about 10 years of age, one had fairly recently joined the monastery and the other had been in the monastery for a few years already and enjoyed the lifestyle and the education it provided him. Although they didn't know what their future had in store for them, they were perfectly happy to stay in the monastery for their immediate futures.Editing
Post-processing was minimal. I edited in Lightroom but wanted to maintain an authentic feel to the shot so that it accurately represented the scene I had in front of me when I captured it. I tweaked the exposure, contrast and highlights, as well as the black point and finished with a bit of sharpening before exporting. In my camera bag
I like to travel light and I have a real paranoia about dust getting onto my sensor so rarely change lenses, sticking to my trusty 24-70 mm 2.8 II on my Canon 5D Mk III. I occasionally travel with a tripod, but rarely use it. So aside from the usual copious amount of spare batteries and memory cards, there isn't much in my bag apart from some lens cleaner!Feedback
Myanmar is a truly magical place and I recommend it to any photographer. It was unlike any other destination I have been to and the light was the best I think I have ever had the privilege of capturing. I would definitely recommend using the services of a local photography guide, who will know exactly what time of day will produce the best light and where to find it. Whilst at the location I would suggest really experimenting with the white balance / temperature of your captures as auto just didn't do the light justice and it was only through playing around with the settings constantly (as the light itself is frequently changing) that I took my best shots.
