Location
This picture was taken just outside the Tasmanian town of Deloraine, we went on an adventure exploring the surrounds after some family had just moved there. We had just stopped as this precession of cows crossed the road we were travelling down. I took the opportunity to wind the window of the car down and take some quick snaps of the inquisitive cows.Time
It was late afternoon on a very overcast day- we spent a few hours being chased by light rain.Lighting
The heavy cloud cover really smoothed out the lighting conditions, which really let the vibrant greens and blues of the area shine.Equipment
This was a handheld shot using the window frame of the car as a gentle rest. The camera was a 5D mk3 with the Canon 24-105mm lens.Inspiration
As it was my first time in the area and was immediately taken with the beautiful countryside- I was pretty much snapping off pictures of everything. And living in the city it's not everyday you a faced with several hundred cows!Editing
I processed this picture through Adobe Lightroom- the lighting was already quite even but I did significantly increase the shadows to bring out more details in the dark patches of the cows. I then added a bit of clarity to make all the details pop. I increased the vibrancy to enhance the green, blues and reds and also used the individual colour sliders for the green and blue. Lastly I painted a hint more exposure on the five prominent cows faces to draw the eye just that little bit more.In my camera bag
At times like this I will always have the Canon 24-105mm as it is my favourite workhorse lens- an essential when travelling. Also in the bag was my Canon 17-40mm which I like to keep handy for any landscape opportunities when travelling the countryside.Feedback
If I had my time over- I would have liked to get a bit closer to the cows- one thing you really notice which these big docile animals is their eyes. If you ever find yourself in a similar position get in there, as they will no doubt look right back down the lens with those beautiful brown eyes!
