Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Colombia, in Rosario Islands, Cartagena.

Time

I was traveling with my twin brother by the Rosario Islands. After lunch we went for a walk around the island and back and at about 5:20 pm I found this beautiful sunset, so I went for the camera and ran to the pier from which I take the picture almost at sea level. The photo was taken on September 9, 2015 at 5:35 pm.

Lighting

Having this beautiful backlight, I use centered the light meter of my gopro to get that beautiful texture of the waves, with boat silhouette and trees on the back. considering that the sun was going to be in the middle of the composition.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a GoPro HERO, no other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

Since I came to the island, I loved the crashing waves, so delicate. That reminded me of one of my biggest inspirations, Joseph Mallord William Turner's fishermen at sea. That painting, takes place in a night landscape inspired me to try to get that texture in the water with the sun shines instead of doing it such as the painter with the moon.

Editing

Yes. As I take the photo with a GoPro and this has a fisheye or wide angle, I had to re frame the picture to remove the excess of sky that came out at the top of the photo. Also contrast and saturation were applied to the image to correct the lack of color that had the camera sensor. So I got the colors I saw when taking the photo.

In my camera bag

Normally I prefer analog photography, so what you can not miss on my bag is my canon a-1, with a prime lens of 51mm and polarized UV filter. For the film, I like kodak ISO 200 and 400 as well as I do not have much budget, I use Fujifilm ISO 200 or 400. For digital photography, I have my GoPro HERO. But normally I use borrowed cameras, like my best friend's Nikon Coolpix L830 or my grandfather's Canon 100d.

Feedback

My advice is to study art books, there's nothing like the paintings. The composition, the colors, the understanding of light. Everything is there! There is the same in contemporary photographs, what I say is that the painters, As an example, in the era of Impressionism, watched more than what's in front of their eyes. The most important thing is not to capture reality, but the invisible essence of things that seem beautiful to us.
